Luanna Jane Ebright, whose signature on the marriage license looks for all the world like "Lovina" Ebright but who was later called "Luanna" or "Lou," was born on December 19, 1843 in Ohio. Her parents were ANDREW SHULTZ EBRIGHT and TABITHA PLUMMER (about whose families we know much more, though most of it is not in this particular family project, which is about our ancestors who have lived in Iowa). In about 1850 Luanna's family moved to Henry County, Illinois. At that time she would have been about seven years old with a slightly older sister, a younger sister, and a baby brother. In Illinois, seven more siblings were born. On May 8, 1864 Luanna was married to John S. Thompson, in Bishop Hill in Henry County, Illinois (Henry County is immediately adjacent to Knox County, where John lived). In October, 1866 they had their first child, Franklin A. (we don't know what the initial stands for if that's all we put down). This was just after the Civil War ended. By March of 1868, when their second child, Emma, was born, they had moved to Iowa, but not yet to Lyon County. Emma was born in Dallas County. Possibly the Thompsons had family there.
John and Luanna's next three children: Oscar, Willmot, and Alvin, were also born in Iowa but we don't know where. By the time their last child, our ancestor James Thompson, was born we know they had settled in Rock Rapids, Lyon County, Iowa. James was born there in 1876. There is more on John and Luanna Thompson's children on this page. There is much on the history of Lyon County, a small, sparsely-populated county in the far northwestern corner of Iowa, where the Thompsons settled and stayed for the rest of their lives in the history of Lyon County, Iowa. Luanna wasn't the only member of the Ebright family who ended up in Lyon County, Iowa. Her sister Barbara Ann ("Anna") Ebright and her brother Reuben Jackson ("R.J.") Ebright were there, too. Barbara Ann married George Shipman in Lyon County, in 1874, and stayed there her entire life. Reuben married Hattie Hopkins in Lyon County, in 1878, but apparently later moved to South Dakota (which isn't far away). Luanna's father, Andrew Ebright, outlived his wife Tabitha (who died in 1865, probably in childbirth as her daughter born in 1865 died in infancy). After his wife's death, in April of 1865 he married Eliza Bowling that same year, in October. She was a widow with six children, and he was a widower with ten living children - ranging in age from 23 down to two years. They moved to Missouri, no doubt with at least several of the children, where Andrew died in Carl Junction in the early 1870s ("from malaria and the kick of a horse"). It seems odd that considering that Luanna Ebright had four brothers, plus her father, her grandfathers, and a husband, she did not name any of her five sons after any of them. Her one daughter did have the name of Luanna's sister, Emma Ebright, who was about twenty years younger than Luanna and in fact was born a year before Luanna was married. To find out more about Louanna's husband, John, see this page. Luanna died on March 22, 1919 in Rock Rapids and is buried in Riverview Cemetery there, as is her husband, who died almost exactly six years later. Two of her children are also buried there, the first and the last.
